Stefan Ruediger, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia. He teaches The EU in the World Economy and Sports Economics in Darden's Global Economies and Markets area and Introductory Econometrics in the College of Arts and Sciences. At Darden, he leads the Executive MBA Global Residency in Germany.
An award-winning educator, he has taught more than 15,000 students across a wide range of economics and statistics courses in face-to-face, hybrid, online, and hy-flex formats. He has also taught Modern Techniques in Finance at UVA's Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy. At Arizona State University, he led faculty efforts to implement multi-million-dollar Gates Foundation and APLU grants, developing adaptive courseware and problem-based active-learning instructional methods for introductory economics—an approach that informs his case method teaching at Darden.
Ruediger's research interests include political economy, economic development, and economic and statistics education. His publications address natural resources and political institutions, the relationship between intellectual property rights and economic growth, financial market transparency in emerging economies, and the regulatory response to the 2007–2008 financial crisis. His interdisciplinary collaborations have also addressed cross-cultural dimensions of health communication. He has authored several Darden cases on the economics of European integration. Beyond academia, he serves as a research associate and data consultant with the American Academy of Actuaries and as a case-based learning consultant for 3DE Schools.
Prior to joining UVA, he was a Clinical Associate Professor at Arizona State University. Earlier in his career, he coached track and field at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and competed for four years on Germany's national bobsled team—experiences that continue to provide a basis for engaging conversations with students and a source of economics and statistics examples.
