The Final Round: Application Tips for Future Year Scholars

The final Future Year Scholars Program application deadline is 15 July 2026! If you graduate between 1 October 2025 and 30 September 2026, this is your final chance to apply for UVA Darden’s Full-Time MBA program through deferred enrollment. 

Director of the Future Year Scholars Program (FYSP) Katherine Roberts recently hosted a Program Overview session, which included topics like Darden’s differentiators — the education experience, career support and our community — and specific tips for individual application sections.

The Resume

FYSP applicants sometimes get stuck when constructing their resumes, because they worry about a lack of professional experience.

Keep it simple and intentional. Roberts explains:  

"Your resume should tell a cohesive story about who you are, what matters to you and where you're headed. Rather than simply listing activities, focus on the leadership roles you've taken on, the impact you've made and the initiatives you've helped drive within your organizations and communities."

For deferred enrollment applicants, we recommend keeping your resume to one page and highlighting the experiences that have been most meaningful to your growth — your academic experience, internships, leadership positions and extracurricular involvement.

The strongest resumes don't just showcase accomplishments; they demonstrate a pattern of initiative, impact and leadership potential.

Short Answer Questions

When it comes to the short answer questions, show, don’t tell.

Try to tell stories or give examples of times you displayed certain characteristics that will make you successful at Darden and in the business world. 

When talking about your future goals, "We don't expect deferred enrollment applicants to have their entire career mapped out or know exactly what they want to do with an MBA. In fact, many students' goals evolve significantly between the time they apply and when they ultimately matriculate. What matters most is that you have thoughtfully reflected on who you are, what motivates you and the direction you're heading." 

Rather than focusing on having a perfectly defined post-MBA plan, focus on demonstrating the leadership you've already shown and your commitment to continued growth.

We are looking for candidates who see the MBA not as a destination, but as an important step in their broader leadership journey — a way to expand their perspective, strengthen their capabilities and increase their impact over time!
