    Required Health Insurance

The University of Virginia requires all students to have health insurance coverage. Students can elect to enroll in the University of Virginia student health insurance plan through Aetna or they may have outside coverage from another insurance provider. More detailed information regarding the Aetna Student Health Insurance plan will be posted on the Student Health website as soon as it is available.  Please be aware the website has not been updated and currently will not reflect the health insurance information for January Section students at this time.

Students must enroll or waive the Aetna Student Health Insurance plan. Once the health insurance enrollment link is available in mid-December, students should be able to enroll or waive the plan until 1 February 2021.

    • For students who enroll in the Aetna Student Health Insurance Plan, the premium will be billed 26 February 2021 and will be due 31 March 2021. The health insurance premium amount is included above and the coverage is from 1 January 2021 until 14 August 2021.
    • For students who have health insurance coverage through another provider, you must submit the Insurance Hard Waiver by 1 February 2021 to confirm you have comparable coverage. Learn more about the University of Virginia’s health insurance requirements on the Student Health website. Please note that if students are living/learning in Charlottesville, out of state Medicaid does not provide comparable coverage and will be denied.

    What Does Financial Aid Cover?

Financial aid may be utilized to cover the full Cost of Attendance (COA) for the program. The maximum amount of financial aid (including scholarships, loans and any other known resources) for which you are eligible is limited to the total COA. The total COA varies based on your residency status and if you will be receiving federal loans.

Financial aid funds accepted in excess of the direct costs will be refunded to you usually within 2 business days of disbursement by the University of Virginia. Once a refund is processed, you should receive the funds within 2–3 business days after the refund date if you have Direct Deposit set up. Otherwise it will be 7–10 business days to receive a paper refund check. Checks will be mailed to your mailing address on file in the SIS.

You must apply for financial aid on an annual basis. Your current financial aid application only covers the COA for the First Year (2020–2021 academic year) of your program. Mark your calendar to reapply for financial aid in the spring for your Second Year (2021–2022 academic year) COA.

Please note you cannot receive Darden financial aid when you are not enrolled in classes.
